I was about seven when I realized I was hopelessly right-brained.

When I was done sweating over math problems and puzzling out science experiments, I’d take refuge in two things: story time and art class. So you can imagine my feverish glee when my teacher asked us to write a story and illustrate it. The idea that the pictures in my head could live on the page made my pencil move like never before.

And to be honest, it’s never stopped. Over a career in various non-profit organizations, time spent studying and teaching in South Korea, and countless days doodling in the margins of my meeting notes, I realized that what I love most about my day job—highlighting the humanity of the people I work with—isn’t incompatible with my favorite hobby. It’s actually what drives my desire to fill the world with as much art as I can. To make people smile, or think. Or both, on an especially good day.
