Web design

Project: Translate a very non-web-friendly report (including footnotes!) into an interactive, paginated series of webpages.

Design overview: I created a new style of report landing page and child pages to create a paginated effect while preserving the flexibility of existing modules on my organization’s WordPress site. This has now become a standard template for future reports, making the creation of web-friendly products faster, consistent, and easier to adapt to specific project needs.

Result: A clear, easy-to-navigate template for reports of any length or level of complexity.

The process

When I took over the web management role at my day job, we only had a single, Gutenberg-based template for creating HTML versions of our reports.

There were two problems with this template: its inflexibility (it was designed for a specific report, without consideration for reusability in other use cases) and its difficulty (it has an incredibly specific style that can only really be edited as huge blocks of HTML ). The only positive element of this template was the pagination feature, which allowed users to go back and forth through the chapters once they reached the bottom of the page.

When I received the request to adapt a new, long-form report in a style that preserved this pagination feature, I used it as an opportunity to build a better template for all reports on our site.

Using existing modules, I created the information architecture and content strategy necessary to allow for a better flow of information across the report. Because so many of our reports follow similar structures, I designed the page templates with reusability in mind.

Final product

Since the creation of this template, I have been able to adapt this structure to several reports, including the forthcoming “15 Years of Progress” report for the 15-year anniversary of the Open Government Partnership.
