Scroll effect storytelling

Scroll effect storytelling

Design overview: I researched and sketched out the idea for a new “scroll effect” module that would elevate storytelling at my organization. After weighing the pros and cons of installing a plugin or paying for a service to insert this feature on our WordPress site, I secured funding to build a custom module with our external web development team and worked closely with them to bring it to life.

Result: A reusable module that has transformed how the Open Government Partnership showcases its work.

The process

It started with a very long blog. A coworker penned a blog about grand corruption that was technical and way over the word count for typical posts. To fix it, I had a vision: what if we could build a scroll effect module to tell this story in a more interactive way and make it easier to digest?

I knew we had money to spend down on website updates, so I developed a proposal to create this new feature on our WordPress site. Once I got approval, I worked closely with our web development team (the excellent folks at DialedIn!) to build a reusable module. After testing and tweaking the functionality, including updates down the line to create a half-page text and image layout, the module was ready to go.

I created all of the assets for the original blog and launched the feature in 2024.

Final product

Currently, I’ve created two different series using this module: one on anti-corruption and digital governance reforms in 2025, and one on the 15-year anniversary of the Open Government Partnership in 2026. I also developed the narrative templates and wrote many of the stories for both series.

Here’s a quick clip of this feature from one of the “15 Years of Progress” stories, on open contracting reforms.
