Project: Redesign the brand of an existing company and create a new website with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, using only a basic text editor and GitHub.
Design overview: I love Mom’s Organic Market, a local grocery chain that fosters community alongside its thoughtfully sourced products. I focused on this company because their website doesn’t quite capture the vibrant, warm atmosphere of its stores.
For this project, I iterated the design over the course of several weeks, as part of my Web and Mobile Design course at Parsons. As we learned about coding modules on a grid system, using JavaScript, and creating responsive design for different devices, I applied each lesson to my evolving website.
Result: A brighter, more colorful website that stays true to the main elements of the original palette.
This was the first time I had to design a website out of thin air. I had no WordPress templates to adapt or in-line code to insert for minor tweaks: it was just me and the blinking cursor of a basic text editor.
Looking through the GitHub files now, I almost can’t believe I pulled it off! But I realized that this early attempt to create something from scratch taught me more about web and mobile design than I had picked up in years of patchwork learning.
Looking back on this project from over a year ago, there are many things I would change (from the color choice for the hover state to the lack of H1 text over the hero image) but there’s something satisfying about revisiting a project that once represented the edge of my abilities and realizing I’ve gone farther than I once thought possible.
And I’ve carried those lessons forward ever since, from creating and customizing this website you’re looking at now, to developing reusable modules for my day job.
